Thanks to our work together, the federal government has stepped up in the fight against deadly fire ants by committing $268 million to the national eradication program.
They now join the Queensland and NSW governments and brings the lion share of funding to fight this tiny killer.
This is a HUGE step forward in the battle to stop one of the world’s worst super pests invading the whole of Australia – threatening our health, environment and very way of life.
Our work doesn’t stop here. There’s still a $140 million funding hole that Australian states and territories urgently need to fill.
The federal, NSW and Queensland governments have already committed to their fair share of the $592 million budget for the next four years of the fire ant eradication program.
It's now up to the remaining state and territory governments to pitch in their fair share. As long as fire ants are in the country, every city, suburb or backyard is at risk.
Fire ants will not wait – we need these extra resources this year. Any further delay will see them breaking containment and taking over Australia.
