Dear Matt Kean,

I fully support the NSW Government’s decision in February to implement emergency control measures to immediately reduce feral horse numbers to protect Kosciuszko National Park.

We cannot delay – please ensure the emergency measures begin immediately. If safe for workers, these measures should still proceed during COVID restrictions.

The public exhibition of a new horse removal plan should also proceed as soon a possible.

The commitment to remove all feral horses from three of the most sensitive habitats in Kosciuszko will greatly benefit fire-impacted species and ecosystems.

With large areas of the park now burnt, action to prevent further trampling and destruction of Kosciuszko’s fragile habitats is even more urgent. At stake is the survival of our threatened corroboree frogs, alpine she-oak skinks, stocky galaxias fish, pygmy possums and broad-toothed rats.

Trapping has failed to reduce horse numbers. I call on you to support all humane control options to reduce feral horse populations across the park.

While the interim measures are a fantastic starting point, they will not be enough to address the impacts from the entire 20,000-strong horse population.

It is vitally important that the interim measures are expanded to reduce the impact of feral horses throughout the park.

A long-term draft wild horse heritage management plan will soon be prepared by NPWS. Please see that this plan is prepared without delay for public exhibition and implementation.

Please continue to fight to protect our beloved Kosciuszko National Park and its wildlife.
