Dear Minister Kean,

I am writing to urge you to set a date for the release of the new draft Kosciuszko horse management plan in Kosciuszko National Park – and preferably by mid-September at the latest.

There should be no further delays. The damage caused by horses to the fragile alpine environment of Kosciuszko has been allowed to go on too long and must cease.

As you know, the 2018 Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act passed by your government over two years ago contains specific provisions for the management of horses – including ensuring environmental values are maintained.

Minister, on behalf of the people of NSW and the precious ecosystems of the park, now is the time to honour the spirit of that legislation and immediately place the new horse removal plan on public exhibition.

Your commitment to manage feral horses in Kosciuszko will protect numerous species and ecosystems, preventing further trampling and destruction of Kosciuszko’s fragile habitats and water catchments.

At stake is the survival of our threatened corroboree frogs, alpine she-oak skinks, stocky galaxias fish, pygmy possums and broad-toothed rats.

A new management plan will also greatly benefit fire-impacted areas as they slowly recover from the devastating Black Summer fires of 2019/20 which burnt a third of the park.

For the sake of our beloved Kosciuszko National Park and its wildlife, now is the time to deliver the new and promised plan. The people of New South Wales deserve no less.
